Abstract

1430800 Light arrangement for use on load handling vehicles CLARK EQUIPMENT CO 29 March 1973 [13 Sept 1972] 15038/73 Heading F4R A light arrangement comprises in a rigid elongate housing means for producing a longitudinally extending pencil beam of light which is directed out of an opening in a side wall of the housing in the form of a substantially planar diverging or apparently diverging beam, the arrangement when mounted on the load handling part of a fork lift truck, for example, producing a sharply defined line of light on surrounding walls, pallets &c. to obtain an indication of the position of the load handling part with respect to the surroundings. As shown the housing may be an elongate hollow tube or box with an opening 136 in the side wall through which the light beam is projected by a reflector 134 which may be adjustably mounted on a fulcrum. If the light source is essentially a point source, e.g. a Xenon short arc lamp, it is disposed at the focus of a parabolic mirror to produce a collimated beam in the housing which is turned through 90 degrees and spread out into a fan-shape by a conical section reflector. If however the light source is relatively large, as shown, e.g. an incandescent lamp 38, an aperture plate 132 is disposed in front of the lamp 38 and parabolic mirror 39 with a twoelement lens system 40, 42 produces the collimated beam. The emergent fan of light is focused on infinity and may have a spread of 30-60 degrees with a vertical cross-sectional dimension of À75 inch. As shown in Fig. 6 the light beam is preferably aligned with the fork tine on which the light arrangement is mounted. In the alternative embodiment shown in Fig. 6 the light source is a bottle type gas laser 174, the beam from which is scanned over an arc to produce an apparent line of light by rotating a 45 degree mirror 176 mounted on the hollow shaft 178 of a hollow shaft electric motor 180 coaxially aligned with the laser beam.
