Mud &c removed from the trench is transported by means of a delivery pipe (19), Fig. 1 (not shown), well away from the tunnel site. The tunnel elements are initially positioned on the bed 9 by means of jacks 22, and then supported by additional sand 23. The tunnel is then covered with a sand layer 11.
