Abstract

1430463 Supported catalyst for ethylene polymerization VEBA-CHEMIE AG 12 July 1973 [12 July 1972] 33246/73 Heading C3P Ethylene is polymerized in the presence of (a) chromic acetylacetonate on a silica-containing material and (b) triisobutylaluminium in a molar ratio of (a) : (b) of 1 : 10 to 200. The process may be carried out in the presence of hydrogen, the ethylene may be copolymerized with other alpha-olefins, and the process may be effected in a hydrocarbon diluent or in the gaseous phase using a fluidized bed of polyethylene powder. Component (a) may be obtained (i) by introducing silica to a heated solution of the acetylacetonate in an aliphatic hydrocarbon whilst stirring or (ii) by spraying a heated solution of the acetylacetonate in an aromatic hydrocarbon on to the silica whilst stirring and evaporating the solvent. In examples, ethylene is homopolymerized or copolymerized with propylene using the above catalysts with silica as support medium, while comparative procedures use vanadium acetylacetonate on silica, tetrapropyl titanate on silica and chromic acetylacetonate on alumina as components (a).
