Abstract
1430437 Hydrocarbon conversion LUMMUS CO 13 Nov 1973 [13 Nov 1972] 52585/73 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Hydrocarbons are converted by continuously generating an aluminium halide by continuously contacting aluminium metal with a hydrogen halide and/or a halogen, continuously adding the aluminium halide to a bed of a Group VIII noble metal supported on a refractory oxide to continuously generate a catalyst and continuously contacting the hydrocarbon feed with the continuously generated catalyst. The hydrogen halide and/or halogen may be premixed with the feed and either first contacted with aluminium metal and the resultant feedaluminium halide mixture contacted with the supported noble metal or contacted with a mixed bed of aluminium metal and supported nobel metal. Alternatively the aluminium halide may be separately generated and added to the bed of supported noble metal separately from the feed. The process may be used in the isomerization, alkylation, transalkylation-disproportionation, hydrocracking and hydrogenation of hydrocarbons. An example describes the production of a supersonic aircraft jet kerosene by feeding a liquid jet kerosene fraction saturated with hydrogen chloride and mixed with hydrogen through a bed of aluminium metal into a bed of platinum on alumina in a reactor at 392-394‹ F. at 500 p.s.i.g. and an LHSV of 0À7.
