Abstract
1430401 Cooling towers APPLICATION ENG CORP 22 May 1973 24497/73 Heading F4K In a cooling tower 20 comprising two mating housing shells 21 and 22 each of plastics material joined together along abutting flanges 26, 36, a packing structure 57 in the form of a plurality of thin plastic sheets 61, 62, 63 &c. is supported on an internal shelf defined by the lower edges 56, 59 of an outwardly projecting central portion 40, 55 of the tower housing. Each sheet 61 is formed with a plurality of individual projections 64, 65 extending outwardly from both sides of the sheet, the projections on one sheet mating with and bonded to corresponding projections on adjacent sheets. The top of the housing has an outwardly projecting rim 71, 74 integrally formed therewith, the lower edge of the rim serving to support a plastics misteliminator grid 76 extending across the housing. In use water to be cooled entering the tower through inlet conduits 78 and 79 is sprayed outwardly over the entire area of the packing structure 57 by means of a ceramic nozzle 81 mounted on a cross fitting 77. Cooled water is withdrawn from the bottom of the tower through a centrally located outlet connection (86, Fig. 7). Preferably all the fittings within the tower are made of plastic material. Cooling air supplied by a blower 44 enters the tower below the packing structure through a duct 46 and is initially deflected downwardly by a deflector vane 50 before passing upwardly through the packing. Access doors having removable covers are provided in the housing for maintenance purposes.
