Abstract
1430391 Alpha-numeric displays F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 7 March 1973 [10 March 1972] 11195/73 Heading G5C [Also in Division H4] Display apparatus comprises a liquid crystal panel between polarizing plates 46, 48 and a reflector 50 comprising a front diffusing surface 52 and a rear reflecting surface 54. The diffusing surface produces a wide viewing angle and reduces unwanted reflections. The panel comprises liquid crystal material between plates 10, 12 carrying electrodes 16... 22, 24... 30. Leads 36 from the electrodes are carried on an extension of plate 10 and form a plug which engages external circuitry. Panels and the liquid crystal material are described in Specifications 1,405,291 and 1,390,522. The electrodes 16... 22 on plate 12 are connected to leads 36A via conductors 40, 42 and conductive resin filling cut-outs 44 in spacer 14. The planes of polarization of plates 46, 48 are at right angles or parallel. The reflector comprises a sheet 50 of transparent glass or plastics material with its front face 52 ground or sandblasted and a reflecting layer of Al, Ni or Cr on its rear surface. The display may be viewed in light from lamps adjacent the edges of sheet 50. Known reflectors of Al 2 O 3 , ceramic, paper and plastics material are referred to.
