Abstract
1430291 Stretching polyethylene terephthalate films TEIJIN Ltd 17 April 1973 18372/73 Heading B5B Biaxially stretched polyethylene terephthalate films are produced by a two-stage drawing process. In the first step the film is drawn to 3À5 to 5À0 times its original dimension at a temperature such that the refractive index n sd of the film after this step is less than 1À560. In the second step the film is drawn in the transverse direction to 3À0 to 4À0 times the original dimensions at a temperature of 50- 150‹ C. The first step may be preceded by a predrawing in the same direction to 1À2 to 3À0 times the original dimension and a temperature between the second order transition temperature and 120‹ C. The second step may optionally be performed in two stages, the first at a temperature of 50-95‹ C. at a draw ratio of at least 1À1 but less than 95% of the total draw ratio of this stage, the second completing the drawing and being performed at a temperature from 70- 150‹ C. and greater than or equal to the temperature of the first stage of this second step. Preferably the first drawing step is performed in the machine direction and the second in the transverse direction. The film may optionally be heat-set. The film may contain no more bifunctional acid components other than terephthalic acid, and diol components other than ethylene glycol, than a total of 15 mol per cent.
