Abstract
1430194 Ground anchors M SHIBATA 6 March 1973 10845/73 Heading E1B An anchoring device comprises an elongate rod 115, 215; a plurality of arms 127, 227, pivotally connected to the rod, to which are secured cutting blades 125, 225; spring means 135, 235 urging each arm to pivot away from a first position in which it lies along the rod; means 141 for releasably holding the arms in the first position, and means 151 for disengaging the holding means 141; and means 137 for limiting the angle through which each arm can pivot. The rod may be tubular and is extended by coupling on additional shafts 145, 601. The spring means may be either tension springs 135, or a compression spring 235 secured on the rod 215 between a fixed flange 257 and slidable member, and the limiting means may comprise links 241 pivotally connected the arms 227 and the slidable member, the preferred angle of pivoting being not more than 75‹ from the rod axis. An indicator 269 may be provided to show the angle of the arms. The method of securing the device in the ground comprises the steps of lowering the device with its arms closed into a bore; disengaging the holding means; rotating the device to enlarge the bore diameter and raising the device to form a cavity; circulating water through the tubular rod to remove debris; inserting a reinforcing cage in the bore; and filling the cavity and bore to ground level with a hardenable filler such as concrete. The arms may be rotated until this is prevented by the filler material, and the device may be vibrated by a drop hammer to compact the filler material.
