Abstract

1430059 Deflecting propulsion jets HAWKER SIDDELEY AVIATION Ltd 2 March 1973 [2 Dec 1971] 56070/71 Heading B7G [Also in Division F2] A V/STOL aircraft has as propulsion plant a by-pass jet engine installed in the fuselage, the efflux being emitted through pairs of dirigible nozzles that direct the gases rearward for propulsion in the normal flight mode while in the STOL mode they are employed at least in part to create a blown flap effect. As shown, an aircraft is provided with rear and forward pairs of dirigible nozzles 12, 15 located under the wing 13. For externally-blown flap (EBF) operation the nozzles are swivelled to the positions shown, with the forward nozzles 15 turned slightly upward, as indicated by the thrust line T F , and the rear nozzles 12 turned down to the extent necessary to keep the respective thrust line T R substantially parallel to the deflected wing flaps 14. The effluxes from the forward nozzles 15 are directed at the gaps 16 between the noses of the flaps 14 and the main part of the wing 13, so that some of the efflux passes through these gaps and flows over the flap upper surfaces to give the required blown flap effect. Thus in the EBF mode, the weight W of the aircraft is counteracted by the wing lift L W , the vertical component of the thrust of the rear nozzle effluxes T R and the blown flap lift L F . Pitch control is, in this particular embodiment, effected by means of a canard wing 17, preferably with blown flaps, with lift augmentation provided by a lift engine 18 forward of the main propulsion engine 11. With the canard wing 17, a tailplane is not necessary.
