1429950 Making glass fibre mats JOHNSMANVILLE CORP 22 Oct 1973 [27 Oct 1972] 41458/75 Divided out of 1429949 Heading D2B A method of making a reinforced glass fibre mat for use in the manufacture of roofing shingles comprises (a) forming a slurry comprising bundles of individual monofilament glass fibres, said fibres being between 15 and 60 mm. long and between 9 and 20 Á in diameter and comprising between 70 and 99% by wt. of the total wt. of fibrous material in the slurry, and asbestos fibres, which comprise between 1 and 30% by wt. of the total wt. of fibrous material in the slurry; (b) agitating the slurry to disperse the asbestos fibres and a proportion of the monofilament glass fibres and to form twisted strands of glass fibres from the remaining monofilament glass fibres, said strands being longer than the individual glass fibres; (c) forming the slurry into a mat; (d) applying a binder thereto; and (e) heating the mat treated with the binder. Insulation type glass fibres i.e. curly glass fibres having a diameter of from 0.05 to 5 Á may be incorporated in the mat. The binder may be a urea-formaldehyde resin. A surfactant may be used to disperse the fibres in the slurry.
