Abstract

1429949 Method of making glass fibre mats JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP 22 Oct 1973 [27 Oct 1972] 49096/73 Heading D2B A method of making a reinforced glass fibre mat for use in the manufacture of roofing shingles comprises (a) forming a slurry comprising individual monofilament glass fibres and bundles of such fibres held together by an adhesive insoluble in the liquid used for forming the slurry; (b) mixing the slurry to disperse the fibres; (c) forming the slurry into a mat; (d) applying a binder to the mat and (e) heating the mat treated with the binder, wherein the individual monofilament glass fibres are between 22 and 35 mm-long and comprise between 70 and 95% by wt of the total fibrous material in the mat, and the glass fibre bundles are between 65 and 75 mm. long and comprise between 5 and 30% by wt. of the total fibrous material in the mat. The binder may be a urea-formaldehyde resin. A cationic surfactant may be used to disperse the fibres in the slurry.
