Abstract

1429787 Colour formers WIGGINS TEAPE Ltd 27 July 1973 [2 May 1972] 20272/72 Heading C4P [Also in Division D2] A water-soluble colourless colour former has the general formula where A and B are each independently selected from the optionally substituted radicals where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> each independently represents H or an opt. subs. hydrocarbon radical, or forms part of a heterocyclic ring containing the attached N atom, Z represents an opt. subs. 1,2-phenylene or 1,2-naphthylene residue, and Y represents oxygen or a group -NR<SP>6</SP>- where R<SP>6</SP> represents H or an opt. subs. hydrocarbon radical, said compounds containing at least one water-solubilizing group. The water-solubilizing group may be anionic or cationic; a group of formula has R<SP>7</SP>, R<SP>8</SP>, R<SP>9</SP> independently representing opt. subs. alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl, or forming part of a heterocyclic ring containing the attached N atom, and associated with the appropriate number of anions. The examples describe the sulphonation of Malachite Green Lactone or 3,3-bis-(1,2-dimethyl-indol-3-yl)-phthalide, giving green or red images respectively with copying systems. Transfer sheet material may be used to prepare a master paper and from this, by the hectographic or spirt-reproducing copying process, a number of copies may be obtained.
