Abstract
1429709 Jointing SONY CORP 7 Dec 1973 [11 Dec 1972] 56917/73 Heading B3V A metal-member is inserted from one side of a synthetic resin substrate through an aperture therein. The substrate is locally softened and pressure applied to the member to complete the insertion, one end of the member projecting through the opposite side of the substrate. The process may be applied to fixing shafts &c. to the chassis of a tape recorder. Apparatus for performing the method comprises a jig 25, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), having posts (59) for locating the chassis 65 and hollow posts 60 for guiding the shafts 71, Fig. 7B, as they are inserted in holes in the chassis. Rollers 58 on the jig run in tracks 29 in a base 22 as the jig is moved against a stop 52 and microswitch 51 for detecting that the jig is correctly positioned beneath plungers 40 which preferably are also arranged to heat the shafts 17 and thus locally soften the chassis. The switch 51 also starts the setting operation which is controlled by a timer. The shafts are initially inserted in the holes which pass the shanks of the shafts but not their enlarged knurled heads. Each presser 40 and its resistance heater 39 is carried in a tube 53 mounted in a slide 36 which is operated by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 33. Posts 37 guide the slide 36 for movement in a frame and a fan 47 cools the assembly. The tubes are biased in the slide by springs 44 to accommodate different levels of the chassis 65 and to permit relative movement as the shafts 71 are stopped by contact with the ends of the bores in the posts 60. The heating temperatures of the heaters 39 is independently controlled in accordance with the sizes of the shafts.
