Abstract

1429228 Alkyl halophenoxy nitrobenzoates MOBIL OIL CORP 11 Sept 1973 [11 Sept 1972 15 Aug 1973] 42719/73 Heading C2C Alkyl halophenoxy nitrobenzoates of formula in which R is a C 1 -C 6 alkyl group, X and Y are the same or different and are halogen atoms, and n is an integer of from 1 to 4, are prepared by nitrating an alkyl halobenzoate of formula in the presence of sulphuric acid and 0À75 to 2À0 moles of nitric acid per mole of alkyl halobenzoate at a temperature from - 20‹ to + 30‹ C., thus forming an alkyl halonitrobenzoate of formula and reacting this with an alkali metal halophenate of formula in which M is an alkali metal, in the presence of dimethylformamide at a temperature in the range 50-150‹ C.
