Abstract
1428858 Plastics springs HERCULES Inc 9 Aug 1973 37830/73 Heading F2S A spring for use in upholstery comprises a hollow corrugated shell of plastics material. Considering the corrugations as annular peaks 12, 14 separated by annular valleys 16, 18, there are required to be either (a) a first group of valley bottoms 16 at a first distance R b from the spring axis A-A and a second group of valley bottoms 18 at a second distance r b from the axis, alternating with the first group; and/or (b) a first group of peaks 14 at a first distance R p from the axis and a second group of peaks 12 at a second distance r p from the axis, alternating with the first group. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the peaks are all at the same distance, whereas in Fig. 4 (not shown) the valley bottoms are all at the same distance. In Figs. 5-8 there are two groups of peaks and two groups of valley bottoms as in Fig. 1, but, whereas in Fig. 1 both the valley bottoms and the peaks are flat when considered in cross-section, in Fig. 5 (not shown) the valley bottoms are curved, in Fig. 6 (not shown) the peaks are curved, in Fig. 7 both valley bottoms and peaks are curved, and in Fig. 8 (not shown) the walls of the valleys are convexly curved. The spring has a short fully compressed height, since the valley bottoms and peaks can telescope within each other (Fig. 2, not shown). Air passages (not shown) are provided in the walls to aid compression. The force-displacement curve is non-linear, and similar to a conical wire coil spring. Production.-The spring is made from polypropylene in two stages. Firstly a tubular parison is extruded. The parison is then placed in a mould of equal length and blow-moulded to expand it into the contour of the mould. The thickness of the walls of the finished spring varies from 9 to 43 mils depending on the diameter of the spring at that point.
