Abstract

1428853 Granulating SOC D'EXPLOITATION DES BREVETS GRANOFIBRE SEBREG 6 July 1973 [21 July 1972] 32435/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division D1] A method of manufacturing a fibrous granulate comprises agitating natural or synthetic fibres which are dry on their surface and have a moisture content of not more than 55% of the total weight of the fibres under dry conditions in order to initiate their imbrication in groups and form fibrous aggregates having little cohesion, depositing a liquid on the surface of the fibres of the aggregates to form liquid menisci between the surfaces of each aggregate and cause tightening of the fibres and evaporating the liquid to intensify the tightening. The fibres may be agitated in a tunnel rotating about a horizontal axis. The aggregates may be graded after agitation. The liquid may be deposited by atomization or spraying. The aggregates may be spread in a layer on a horizontal inclined, cylindrical or helical surface and vibrated during liquid deposition. The liquid may contain an agent which swells the fibres, softens the surface of the fibres or bonds the fibres together to improve further the connection between the fibres of an aggregate. The aggregates may be subjected to a heat treatment to produce either local welding between the fibres or contraction, if the fibres are thermocontractible. The moisture content after liquid deposition may be from 50- 80% as based on the total weight of the moist aggregate. The liquid may be water which may contain a surfactant and/or a binder such as starch or the liquid may be a hydrocarbon. Many inorganic and organic fibres are disclosed. The aggregates may be used as insulating fillers or as the base layer of laminates.
