Abstract

1428723 Rivet bush PSM FASTENERS Ltd 7 May 1974 [19 July 1973] 34442/73 Heading F2H A rivet bush comprises a head portion 10 having a screw-threaded bore 12 and a hollow shank portion 18 having a non-screw-threaded inner surface 16 and a frusto-conical outer surface with its end having the larger diameter adjacent head portion 10 and of lesser diameter than the latter and which is formed with longitudinally extending teeth 20, each tooth extending from the smaller diameter end of the outer surface and terminating short of its larger end. The bore 12 may be a blind bore, as shown. Each tooth may extend over substantially 50% of the axial length of the outer surface of the shank 18, and the crest of each tooth may be collinear with the untoothed part of the shank 18. The end face 24 of the head portion may be undercut as shown. In use, end 22 of shank 18 may be inserted in a hole in sheet metal having a thickness less than the axial length of the untoothed part of shank 18, and the bush is driven in so that the untoothed part engages as an interference fit in the hole. When the end face 24 seats on the sheet metal around the hole, the shank is spread by a punch to clinch the bush in position (Fig. 3, not shown).
