Abstract
1428123 Soldering ADCOLA PRODUCTS Ltd 31 May 1973 [8 June 1972] 26861/72 Heading B3R An electrically heated soldering instrument comprises a heat pipe (a device including pipe 4 within which a working liquid evaporates at one part and is transported to another part where it releases its latent heat of condensation, returning to the one part assisted by a wick lining the pipe) extending between a bit 11 and a heating element 3 in the form of a coil wound on and supported by the pipe of the heat pipe. In an embodiment the instrument comprises a handle 1 and a mild steel, stainless steel or nickel-iron alloy pipe 4 which contains mercury or a mixture of 73À5% diphenyl oxide and 26À5% diphenyl, introduced into the pipe during manufacture through an extension 5 subsequently welded and crimped. In use the heat from the coil causes the liquid to vaporize and travel to the right as indicated by the central arrows. At the right hand end the vapour condenses, gives up its latent heat and returns to the left hand end along the wick on the wall surfaces as indicated by the smaller arrows. The heated end 11 has an edge 13 forming the bit. In a modification a bit which may be tapered or not is fitted as a removable tip on the end of the tube formed at right-angles to the tube axis.
