Abstract
1428087 Electrolytic diaphragm cell OLIN CORP 25 Oct 1974 [31 Oct 1973] 46265/74 Heading C7B An electrolytic diaphragm cell for chlor-alkali electrolysis comprises a horizontal body having substantially parallel opposite ends each having a hole sealingly closed by a respective anode and cathode plate, each plate carrying at least one respective anode or cathode on its inner surface, and the plates serving to support the cell body. The body may be of rectangular, circular or elliptical section and may be made of fibre (e.g. asbestos or fibreglass) - reinforced plastics (e.g. polyester or epoxy), rubber, steel, Ti or concrete. A steel or concrete body may be lined with rubber, ceramic, or fibre, C, Si or glass flake - reinforced plastics, PTFE or polychlorotrifluoro-ethylene. The anode plate may be steel, Cu, Al or Ti lined with rubber, PTFE, fibre-reinforced plastics, Ti or Ta, and may be attached, e.g. by bolts, welds or solder to anodes of graphite, valve metal, or steel, Cu or Al coated with valve metal, and which, when valve-metal surfaced, carry a coating of one or more Pt group metals/oxides. The anode may be a (perforated) sheet, expanded metal or a screen. The cathode plate may be of steel or Cu coated with rubber, PTFE or fibre-reinforced plastics and is welded or bolted to cathodes of steel or Cu comprising a plate or rod to which is attached a cathodic screen for supporting the diaphragm. The diaphragm may be fibres of asbestos, PVdC, polypropylene or PTFE deposited on the cathode screen or may be woven polyethylene, polypropylene or PTFE material. The plates may be bolted to the cell body via flanges thereon and support the body via supports which bear on a concrete base. The current connections may have holes for bolting to the connections of adjacent cells. The anodes and cathodes may be interdigitated, a space being left between them and the periphery of their support plate to allow electrolyte circulation.
