Abstract

1427961 Welding by pressure; making pipe fittings AGRATI-GARELLI SpA 5 March 1973 [18 March 1972] 10514/73 Headings B3A and B3R In assembling an article having a main sleevelike body 10 from which secondary sleevelike bodies 11, 12 project, a blank is stamped from sheet metal and is bent into the general shape of the article with the main body 11 open along a longitudinal line 13 and each secondary body open along two lines 14, 15, the article is clamped between two jaws 16, 16 which engage the main body over an area not less than <SP>2</SP>/ 5 ths and not more than <SP>4</SP>/ 5 ths of the surface area of the main body and engage each secondary body over an area not less than <SP>1</SP>/ 5 th of the surface area of the secondary body, and electric power is connected to the jaws to resistance weld the article along each said line. A single stamped sheet metal, e.g. mild steel, blank is bent to the general shape shown in Fig. 1 but with the seams 13, 14, 15 spaced apart and the body is placed between clamps 16 shaped to receive part of the main body 11 and all of bodies 11, 12. A pad 17 is pressed by a lever 19 on to the side of the body 10 remote from the bodies 11, 12 and the clamps 16 which are connected to a current source 30 are pressed together to effect resistance welding of the seams 13, 14, 15. The clamps may embrace a greater area of the body 10 than that shown when the pad 17 is omitted.
