Abstract

1427845 Coated optical elements POLAROID CORP 2 May 1973 [2 May 1972] 20915/ 73 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5, C3 and G2] A light-polarising element for use in making a composite lens is coated on both sides with a layer of cellulose nitrate which enhances adhesion of lens components which are to be moulded (see Division B5) and polymerised in situ onto each side of the polarising element and also inhibits migration of constituents between the element and the attached components. A polyvinyl alcohol polarising element having a layer of cellulose acetate butyrate bonded to either side is coated with an adhesion promoter/barrier layer of nitrocellulose containing an organic acetonate cross-linking agent and preferably another resin such as a phenolic, a polyhalogenated vinyl polymer, a polyamide, an acrylate resin, a polyester, or an epoxy. A suitable coating composition comprises nitrocellulose, titanium di(acetyl acetonate), melamine formaldehyde resin, triphenyl phosphate plasticiser, and maleic acid catalyst dissolved in methylcellulose, acetone and methanol which are evaporated after coating.
