Abstract

1427670 Rotational casting; foamed, crosslinked polyethylene ROTOPLAS Ltd and CENTRE FOR INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH Ltd 28 March 1974 13868/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] In the rotational moulding of cross-linked, foamed polyethylene, solid polyethylene having a melt flow index above 1À8 is blended with a blowing agent and cross-linking agent in a non- acidic medium and heated in a hollow mould at 190-300‹ C. while rotating the mould, e.g. about two mutually perpendicular axes, the cross-linking agent being used in an amount of 0À1-2% by wt. of the polyethylene and being an organic peroxide having a half life of 3-25 minutes and a vapour pressure not higher than 5 mm. Hg at 20‹ C. The peroxide is preferably used in the liquid state and may be 2,5-dimethyl- 2,5 - di - (tert. - butyl - peroxy) hexyne - 3 or 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di-(tert.-butyl-peroxy) hexane. An additive for regulating the decomposition temperature of the blowing agent may be zinc oxide, zinc stearate or titanium oxide. The blowing agent may be sodium bicarbonate, 4,4<SP>1</SP>- oxybis - (benzene - sulphonyl - hydrazide), trihydrazinotriazine, dinitrosopentamethylene tetramine, or 4,4<SP>1</SP>-oxybis-(benzene-sulphonylsemicarbazide), or preferably, 1,1-azobisformamide (azodicarbonamide). The moulded article may have a solid, outer layer of a thermoplastic resin, e.g. unfoamed polyethylene, with the inner layer of the foamed, cross-linked polyethylene.
