Abstract

1427619 Cushions BAYER A G 1 June 1973 [3 June 1972] 26217/73 Heading A4M [Also in Divisions B4-5 and D1-2] An upholstery cushion comprising an outer stretchable textile cover 1, an elastomeric sealing layer 2 and a core 3 of foam material, is produced by foaming the core material in a mould lined by the cover and layer, the temperature of the foam reaction adjacent the sealing layer 2 being low enough to prevent reduction of the elasticity of the cover and layer. The textile cover may be a knit fabric of textured continuous yarns based on polyamide and/or polyester, and the knit fabric may be double-surface circular knit or flat-knit or a one-surface velour-like knit or a single jersey fabric. Or the cover may be a flock fabric, the sealing layer consisting of an elastomer film stretched during flocking, with a layer of adhesion promoter in which flock fibres based on polyamide and/or polyester and/or polyacrylonitrile are anchored. The sealing layer may be of a thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer or a layer of plasticized P.V.C. coated with a layer of polyurethane solution on the foam side, or of a latex based on acrylic esters or methacrylic esters or their copolymers with vinyl compounds. Coating can be carried out with a solution, or a granulate of thermoplastic elastomers may be applied to the textile on a melting calendar. The sealing layer may be a film joined to the textile by flame-lamination. A film of soft polyurethane foam, e.g. polyether urethane (59), may he interposed between the textile layer and the sealing layer and joined to both by flame-lamination. The cushion may be produced in a vacuum mould. In one embodiment the textile cover is a textured polyester yarn, the sealing layer consists of a 20% solution of a polyurethane elastomer in dimethyl formamide applied in two layers to the fabric by the reverse-coating process, and the foam core is produced from an organic polyol, an isocyanate, an expanding agent, a catalyst and a siloxane block copolymer as foam stabilizer.
