Abstract

1427607 Generating vibrato SONY CORP 29 Nov 1973 [11 Dec 1972] 55472/73 Heading H4R In an audio reproduction system a signal is fed through a delay device whose delay is controlled by clock pulses and the frequency of the clock pulses is varied to provide frequency modulation of the signals passing through the delay device to cause vibrato in the reproduced signal. As described the vibrato is applied to the signal from a microphone 6 by feeding the signal through a vibrato unit 10 comprising a preamplifier 11 and bucket brigade delay device 12 fed with shift pulses from a generator 15 whose frequency is modulated by a low frequency oscillator 16. The delayed and frequency modulated signal from delay device 12 is passed through a buffer amplifier 13 and low pass filter 14 before addition to the signal from a phonograph 1. In Fig. 1 the variably delayed signal is added to one channel and the undelayed microphone signal is added to the other channel from a stereophonic source 1. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the signal from the vibrato unit (10) is added to both channels, mixed with undelayed microphone signal from an amplifier (7) if desired. Fig. 6 (not shown) is a modification of Fig. 1 in which centre signals of the stereo source are at least partially cancelled by cross mixing in antiphase the signals in the two channels using matrix 6, while in Fig. 7 (not shown) the signal fed through the vibrato unit is derived from the stereo source as the centre, or L + R signal. In a further modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the amount of vibrato applied to the signal is controlled in accordance with signal level by feeding the frequency control voltage of the pulse generator (15) through a circuit (17) whose gain is controlled by the signal level applied to the delay device (12). In this embodiment the rate of vibrato is controlled by switching in alternative LF oscillators (16 and 26) operating respectively at 7 and 30 Hz.
