Abstract

1427500 Producing germanium dioxide LE NICKEL 6 Aug 1974 [9 Aug 1973] 34689/74 Heading C1A Germanium oxide is produced from oxidic compounds containing germanium and heavy metals by a method comprising successively the steps of: (a) leaching with sulphuric acid solution the acidic compounds with sulphuric acid to obtain a dilute acid solution (e.g. 0À3 N to 1À0 N); (b) treating the solution with hydrogen sulphide to obtain a precipitate including germanium sulphide; (c) filtering the precipitate and washing it with dilute sulphuric acid; (d) reacting the washed precipitate when wet with gaseous chlorine and immediately distilling off the germanium tetrachloride formed, and (e) hydrolysing the germanium tetrachloride to yield germanium oxide, filtering, washing and drying the product. The product, which is more than 99% pure, is suitable for use in making polyester fibres.
