1427483 Cutting apparatus COMSTOCK & WESCOTT Inc 3 April 1974 [4 June 1973] 14849/74 Heading B4B A cutting wheel for roughing the backbone leaf edges of an unbound fibre paper book 1 comprises a plurality of cutting teeth 8 mounted on the periphery of a disc 11 each tooth having a leading surface 13 and a cutting edge 14, the leading surface having a radially inward inclination in one direction with respect to the disc rotation so that, in use, tab-like formations 32, Fig. 7, which are cut by the cutting edges, are twisted by the surface to thereby partially sever the tabs, and at least one raker tooth 9 having a raking edge 23 inclined at an angle opposite to the inclination of the surface 13 so as to twist the tabs in the opposite direction and thereby tear them from the edges of the book leaves to provide fibrous edges, Fig. 9 (not shown). The cutting teeth, e.g. of tungsten carbide, are brazed or welded into recesses 12 formed in the disc and extend beyond the plane of the disc as shown in Fig. 2. As shown in the plan view of Fig. 1, the disc rotates across the backbone of the book 1 which is held between clamping plates 2, the teeth running within a groove 6 formed in the underside of a back-up plate which supports the backbone of the book during cutting.
