Abstract

1426964 Discharging articles singularly AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORISATION DE LA RECHERCHE 25 May 1973 [26 May 1972] 25287/73 Heading B8S [Also in Division C6] Sensitivity discs impregnated with antibiotics are delivered from storage tubes 5, Figs. 2, 3 and 5, on to the surface of nutrient agar medium 3 in a Petri dish 2 of square or other cross-section by first rotating the knob 9 of a transfer device 1 whereby a transfer plate 28 is displaced linearly to the right, by the winding of a traction cord, against the compression of springs 41, which movement transfers the lowest disc within each tube to the corresponding dispensing position 52, Fig. 3, and then a key 56, Fig. 2, is indexed into an axial opening and the knob 9 is then depressed whereby a platen 6 and plungers 7 loosely mounted therein descend against the compression of springs 53 pushing the discs through the ejection passageways in the base 11 of the device and on to the surface of the agar. The discs are made slightly larger than the passageways to prevent their free fall. The platen 6 is driven sufficiently far downwards for the discs to be applied against the agar by a force determined by the mass of the plunger 7 prior to its release. Premature return of the transfer plate is prevented in known manner with a retractable abutment means 42.
