Abstract

1426680 Welding by explosion EXPLOSIVE METAL WORKING HOLLAND BV 11 June 1974 [12 June 1973] 25892/74 Heading B3R In a method of producing a bond of predetermined area between two metal parts, e.g. a strip-shaped branch electrical conductor 11 and an electrical cable conductor 13 (insulation 12 being removed), by the firing of an explosive charge, the parts are relatively positioned with a narrow gap 14 between them such as by placing the strip on the remaining insulation 12, Fig. 3, a strip or plate 15 of resilient hard metal, e.g. steel, having dimensions corresponding to the area of the required bond is placed on or against one of the parts and an explosive charge, e.g. detonator 17, is positioned on the strip 15, so that it only covers a portion of the said area, and the charge is fired. A portion 18 of the facing surfaces of the parts is directly bonded, Fig. 4, while the remaining portions 21 are cleaned and plasticized by the blast 19 and strip 15 is deformed, whereupon as the strip 15 straightens to assume its normal shape Fig. 5 the remaining portions 21 are bonded together. In a modification, Fig. 6, for larger areas strip or plate 15<SP>1</SP> is enlarged and strip 11<SP>1</SP> is profiled to provide constructions 14a, 14b in the gap which have the effect of a Venturi on the issuing blast which is projected further.
