Abstract

1426586 Electroless deposition of metal patterns WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 15 May 1973 [15 May 1972 (2)] 23031/73 Heading C7F Metal patterns are electrolessly deposited on substrates by contacting the substrate with a photo-sensitive colloidal sensitizer solution comprising an insoluble colloidal hydrous oxide of Pd, Pt or Au, selectively exposing parts of the sensitized surface to ultraviolet radiation to form a pattern and then contacting the surface with an electroless metal solution to deposit metal only on those parts not exposed to the ultraviolet radiation. The colloidal sensitizer solution may be prepared by a hydrolysis and nucleation reaction in which an aqueous solution of a Pt, Pd or Au salt has its pH maintained at a value such that no precipitate or flocculate occurs. The colloidal solution preferably contains particles 10-10,000 A‹ size and the ultraviolet radiation wavelength is less than 3000A‹. The metal deposited from the electroless solution may be Cu, Au or Pt and the solution may contain formaldehyde as a reducing agent. The substrate may be non-conductive e.g. a polyimide resin and a positive quartz mask may be used to mask the sensitized surface. The process is used in producing printed circuits.
