Abstract

1426572 Resin coated tubes TAKIRON CO LTD 20 Feb 1973 [20 Feb 1973] 8339/73 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and F2] A tube is coated with an adhesive layer or layers onto which is applied a coating of a synthetic resin formed with annular projections disposed at intervals therealong, the tube being useful for supporting plants. A steel tube is preferred and formed from a steel band by seam welding before being cleaned and phosphated. In a first embodiment a first adhesive primer layer is then applied which may comprise an acrylic ester/acrylamide/styrene terpolymer mixed with an epoxy resin modified phenolic resin or an oil-modified epoxy resin, the modifying oil being dehydrated castor oil, soyabean oil, tung oil, safflower oil or linseed oil, and then a second adhesive primer layer which may comprise a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/maleic anhydride terpolymer with a nitrile-butadiene rubber, chlorinated rubber or rubber hydrochloride. The primer layers are applied as solutions. A top layer of synthetic resin is applied by die extrusion of a melt of the resin, projections being formed by varying the width of the nozzle of an extruder die (see Div. B5) to vary the thickness of the resin applied. The resin may be a vinyl chloride resin. In a second embodiment, the tube and top layer are the same, but a single primer coat is made of a mixture of the resins of first and second adhesive layers.
