Abstract

1426476 Making reinforced metal composites UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 25 June 1973 [10 July 1972] 30055/73 Heading B3A A method of making a plasma sprayed aluminium or aluminium alloy composites reinforced with a plurality of filaments comprises placing at least one composite tape having a plurality of unidirectional filaments embedded in a plasma sprayed matrix between heated platens, pressing the tape or tapes between the platens for 2-40 minutes in air at 7-700 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> to densify the matrix, the temperature of the platens being below the solidus temperature of the matrix when the pressure is 140- 700 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and between solidus and liquidus when the pressure is 7-140 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>, the temperature, pressure and pressing time being sufficiently high to cause bonding of the matrix to the filaments without degradation. The composite tape may have a foil backing for ease of handling and when a plurality of tapes are stacked together between the platens, the filaments may be uniaxial or laid as cross-plies at various angles. The filaments are selected from the group boron, silicon carbide, silicon carbide coated boron, boron carbide, alumina or carbon. Preferably a stack of aligned tapes is held between the closed platens at a low pressure to allow them to regain their original temperature and then a pressure of 35-140 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> is applied for bonding to occur in 2-15 minutes. After bonding, the platens are opened, the tapes advanced and the process is repeated. Alternatively a higher bonding pressure of 140- 350 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> may be used, in which case the platens are below the solidus temperature of the matrix and for economic reasons not more than 25‹ C. below. The tapes should be brought to temperature rapidly to obviate the need for a vacuum or an inert atmosphere and bonding is achieved in a short time at low pressure thereby avoiding fibre degradation and crushing in the case of cross plied composites.
