1426155 Pipe connector seal HYDRIL CO 9 April 1974 [30 April 1973] 15712/74 Heading F2G A seal apparatus which provides a seal between mutually opposed faces 12, 13 and around ports 15, 16 of members 10, 11 of a pipe connector when the ports are aligned comprises concentric tubular inserts 17, 18 in port 15 of member 10 capable of relative telescopic movement, the insert 17 having an end portion 19 projecting beyond the surface 12 and a rubber ring 30 between the outer end portions of the inserts. As the two members 10, 11 are brought together to register ports 15, 16 the projecting portion 19 engages face 13 of member 11 forcing insert 17 inwards thus axially compressing bead 30a of ring 30 between shoulders 17b and 18b of the respective inserts 17, 18 which squeezes the rubber axially towards face 13 effecting a seal between the members. An annular Belleville spring 32 in bore 33 between shoulder 24 and the inner end of insert 18 adds to the resiliency of the seal and as the ports are brought into alignment inserts 17, 18 are pushed inwardly to compress the spring 32 accentuating the pressure of both the insert end 19 and the rubber at 30b against face 13. The extent of the outward projection of end portion 19 is limited by engagement of a shoulder 20 on insert 17 with end face 21 of an annular retainer 22 screwed into a counter bore 23 in member 10. 0-rings 35, 36 respectively provide sealing between the inserts and between insert 17 and bore 33.
