Abstract
1425754 Sputtering wires, rods or strips ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 22 Aug 1974 [3 July 1973] 31592/73 Heading C7F A coating is sputtered on a strip, wire or rod, by first subjecting it to electron bombardment in a glow discharge to clean and heat it. As shown a wire 10 is passed through a first cathode of e.g. Al or stainless steel where the electron bombardment takes place, then it is passed through a part 12 of coating metal e.g. Pb, Zn or Cu. In a modification, Fig. 3, the coating part of the cathode may have alternate segments of stainless steel 16 and bars 17 of coating material which can be moved radially inwardly as the material wears.
