Abstract
1425460 Bearings AMALGAMATED DENTAL CO Ltd 18 June 1973 [14 Nov 1972] 52580/72 Heading F2A [Also in Division F1] The invention relates to a gas driven, gasbearing turbine and is described with reference to a dental turbine which comprises a stator casing 1 and a rotor 2 supported therein by two bearing members 15, 16 each independently and resiliently mounted in the stator casing by means of a pair of resilient support members 23 encircling the bearing member, each bearing member 15, 16 being of one-piece construction and provided with one or more apertures 26 extending from the outer to the inner surface thereof. The rotor 2 is formed with recesses which define blades 9 to which air under pressure is directed through passage 11 and nozzle 13 formed in the stem 12 which is secured to the stator casing 1, the air discharging from the blades through exhaust passage 14. Each bearing member 15, 16 is formed at its outer surface with annular grooves 22, 24, the resilient support members 23 being disposed in the outer grooves 22 so as to form a sealed chamber to which air under pressure is supplied from the passage 11 through bores 18, 19 the air passing from the chamber through bores 26 extending from the centre groove 24 to the bearing surface. The bearing members 15, 16 are formed of tungsten carbide or silicon nitride, and the support members 23 may be 0-rings as shown or L-shaped, U-shaped or V-shaped gaskets. One end of the stator casing is closed by a cap 5, the other end being open whereby a tool may be engaged in the bore 3a of the rotor.
