Abstract

1425201 Ultrasonic inspection devices; ultrasonic probes BRITISH STEEL CORP 14 June 1974 [19 June 1973] 29051/73 Headings H4D and H4J An electrically-conductive article is tested ultrasonically by generating a substantially constant magnetic field at its surface, energizing an adjacent coil with an RF voltage pulse of about one cycle duration so as to induce, in the presence of the constant field, ultrasonic waves in the article, and detecting the waves after propagation in the article. In the Fig. 1 embodiment, a hot moving article 2 is tested for flaws or thickness by a probe 1 including a D.C. energized magnet coil of watercooled copper tube 5 on a soft-iron core 7. A further coil 23, is energized by voltage spikes from RF generator 26. A hollow end-plate 13 of the probe has coolant flowing through it and has passages 16 through which pressurized air is fed to form an air cushion which both supports the probe 1 above article 2 and provides heat insulation. The probe also receives echo signals from article 2, or a second, similar probe may be used to receive signals in a through-transmission mode of testing.
