1425147 Coating composition FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 4 Sept 1974 [6 Sept 1973] 38693/74 Heading C3B A powder coating composition comprises a mixture of (I) a copolymer derived from 5-20% by wt. of a glycidyl ester of a monoethylenically unsaturated acid, 2-10% by wt. of a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate and 70-93% of other monoethylenically unsaturated monomer(s), which has a glass transition temp. of 40-90‹ C. and number average M.W. 1500-15,000; and (II) an anhydride of a dicarboxylic acid so as to provide 0À3-1À2 anhydride groups for each functional group on the copolymer (i.e. epoxy plus hydroxyl groups). A typical I is prepared from 15% (all by weight) glycidyl methacrylate, 5% hydroxyethyl methacrylate, 40% butyl methacrylate and 40% methyl methacrylate. II may be monomeric, e.g. phthalic or tetrahydrophthalic anhydride or polymeric, e.g. polyazelaic polyanhydride. The compositions may additionally comprise a cross-linking catalyst, e.g. a quaternary ammonium compound, a flow control agent, e.g. poly(lauryl methacrylate), pigment and antistatic agent. The compositions are useful in electrostatic spraying.
