Abstract

1425128 Knitting; yarns SMITHFIELD FIBERS INC 17 April 1973 18365/73 Headings DIC, D1K and D1W A knitted yarn comprises two separate strands 24, 26 formed into two separate chains of stitches, a third yarn 28 being alternatively knitted with the other two strands, the yarn being knitted on a machine comprising two latch needles 34, 36 reciprocable along two parallel axes. Latch needles 34, 36 sliding vertically in a block 38 operate alternately to receive respectively yarns 24, 26 and at the same time yarn 28. Bar 32 carrying guides 58, 60, 62 for yarns 24, 26, 28 is oscillated across in a plane parallel to that containing the needles. If strand 28 is thick, the resulting yarn is substantially round but, if thin, a rectangular section or ribbon-like yarn results. The strands may be twisted, braided or knitted or yarns made as described. Yarn feeding mechanism 22 comprises units 120, 122 which drive, at the same speed, spindles 126, 134 of different diameters to feed yarn 28 at a different rate from yarns 24, 26. Motor (104), Fig. 8 (not shown) which drives mechanism 22, also drives shaft 106 and from its shaft 150 at twice the speed. Eccentric cams 142, 144, 152, 154 on shafts 106, 150 operate levers 160, 162, 164, 168 controlling bar 32, first needle lever 162, throw-bar lever 164, and second needle lever 166. Bar 168 which carries bar 32 can support a second yarn guide assembly so that two yarns can be knitted Simultaneously. This arrangement produces open stitches, to produce closed stitches, cam 144 is moved to shaft 150 to rotate at twice the speed of cam 142. Needle levers 162, 166 comprise horizontal arms 222 with apertures 228 having bushings 226 in which the lower ends of needles 34, 36.
