Abstract

1425118 Boring earth &c OIL PATCH INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 March 1973 12875/73 Heading E1F [Also in Division F2] A drill-string vibration damper comprises a tubular barrel 52, 54, 56, a tubular mandrel 20, 34, slidably received in the barrel, a sealed spline assembly 44 coupling the barrel and mandrel together, and resilient compressible packing means 18 for damping longitudinal vibrations therebetween. The mandrel comprises two sections 20, 34 interconnected by means of a joint 28, but may alternatively be formed as an integral unit. The section 34 forms with an intermediate section 54 of the barrel an annular chamber for the receipt of bushes 16 separated by means of annular resilient members 18 having concave faces 92, (94), Fig. 3 (not shown). Sealing rings 60 and 78 are provided to prevent drilling mud from entering between the mandrel and barrel.
