Abstract

1424804 Porous plastics laminates IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Jan 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 5351/72 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C3 and C7] Laminates comprise a number of sheets of porous polytetrafluoroethylene calendered to each other and optionally to a sheet of polymer e.g. polypropylene, gauze. In the examples, aqueous dispersions of polytetrafluoroethylene were mixed with water, titanium dioxide and maize and potato starch, and the mixture was stirred with a paddle-mixer to form a paste: the paste was then (i) dried and then mixed with water to form a dough, (ii) mixed at a high shear rate to form a dough, or (iii) mixed with a maleic anhydride/methyl vinyl ether copolymer as thickening agent and NaOH and stirred to form a dough; the dough was then calendered to form a sheet which was cut into pieces and the pieces were laid over each other to form a laminate which was calendered again and the resultant sheet again cut into pieces and laminated; this calendering and laminating was repeated a number of times with and without rotation of the sheet through 90 degrees in the horizontal plane before calendering; finally a polypropylene gauze was laminated on to the above sheet by calendering and the laminate was soaked in aqueous hydrochloric acid to remove the starch and thereby produce a porous sheet suitable for use as a diaphragm in electrolytic cells.
