Abstract

1424504 Fluidized active carbon purification of water KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK and TOYO BOSEKI KK 5 March 1974 [14 March 1973] 9924/74 Heading C1C A method of purifying an aqueous liquid by adsorbing impurities on granular activated carbon comprises passing an aqueous liquid with a linear velocity of from 10 to 40 metres/ hour upwardly through a bed of granular activated carbon, the activated carbon having the following characteristics: (i) a particle size in the range 200-500 Á; (ii) a particle size range of at least 300 Á; and (iii) a particle size distribution such that, when the particle size range is divided into three equal particle size ranges, from 20 to 40% by weight of the total activated carbon has a particle size within each of the three equal particle size ranges whereby the bed of activated carbon is fluidized on a particle size gradient of the activated carbon is produced along the direction of flow of the aqueous liquid through the bed. The aqueous liquid may be an industrial waste water, municipal sewage, or a source of potable water. Exemplified are petroleum plant waste water with a Chemical Oxygen Demand content of 120 p.p.m., and water containing 100 mg./l. of methylene blue.
