Abstract

1424462 Invalid lifting device A SCHWARTZ 25 April 1973 19549/73 Heading B8H [Also in Divisions A4 and B7] An invalid chair is provided with means for raising and lowering an occupant between the seated and an upright position. The chair has a wheeled frame which pivotally mounts at 33 a seat frame, this in turn pivotally mounts at 29 a seat back 31. Arms 39 are pivotally connected between frame uprights 35 and the seat back. The seat frame and back are raised and lowered through a cable 86 connected between an arm 92 rigidly mounted at the front of the seat frame and a screw block 79 mounted on a rotatable screw 78. Screw 78 is rigid with a pulley 76 which is connected by a loose belt 74 to a further pulley 72 driven by a reversible electric motor 60. An idler wheel 136 (Fig. 7, not shown), controlled by a knob 51 and cable 61, is movable to tension the belt thus allowing selective drive to pulley 76. Switches 55, 56<SP>1</SP> are provided to disengage the motor when contacted by the screw block at the extremities of its movement. A safety spring 140 is provided to ensure gentle lowering of the seat if the cable 86 snaps. The chair may be propelled by hand or by the motor 60. The motor output is connected via a reduction gear 66 to a pulley 68 which together with a pulley 98 is encircled by a loose belt 96. Pulley 96 is rigid with a rotatable shaft 100 which carries further pulleys 106, 108 at each end, these latter pulleys connecting via loose belts 110, 112 with pulleys 114, 116 which respectively engage each of the front wheel tyres 1. Idler wheels (Figs. 5-7, not shown) controlled by knobs 51, 55, 57 and cables 59, 63, 65 control the tensioning of the belts and hence the drive of the wheels.
