Abstract

1424098 Fluorocarbon emulsions MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 14 May 1973 [15 May 1972] 22863/73 Heading B1V [Also in Division D1] A water-in-fluorocarbon emulsion is stabilized with a non-ionic emulsifier containing a fluoroaliphatic non-polar hydrophobic moiety and a non-ionic hydrophilic moiety, the emulsifier being soluble in water to the extent of at least 0.1 wt% and in the fluorocarbon to the extent of at least 0.01 wt%. The fluorocarbon medium can be saturated or unsaturated, straight chained, branched, cyclic or a combination and can contain O, N, H, Cl. It generally has boiling range between 55‹ and 200‹C, and contains 60% to 76% carbonbonded fluorine; the emulsion may contain as much as 50 wt% fluorocarbon medium. The emulsifier may contain a monovalent fluoroaliphatic moiety of 3 to 20 carbon atoms containing 40 to 78% carbon bonded fluorine, and a hydrophilic moiety comprising a polyoxyalkylene or polyester component, the emulsifier then containing 30% to 60% carbon bonded fluorine overall, and may have general formula (R f ) m Q z (R) n , where R f is a fluoroaliphatic radical, R is a hydrophilic monovalent radical such as [(CH 2 CH 2 O) x A], where Q is a linking radical, m, n, z are each 1 to 3, x is 1 to 25, and A is a monovalent organic radical or hydrogen.
