Abstract
1424085 Ultrasonic inspection devices BRITISH STEEL CORP 7 June 1974 [15 June 1973] 28609/73 Heading H4D An article is tested ultrasonically by directing pulses from a probe to the surface of the article via a coupling liquid conveyed to the probe, conveying the liquid away from the probe and from the surface, and causing a gaseous flow to sweep the surface to remove any residual liquid. In Fig. 1 the edge of moving metal strip 3 to be welded is tested by transmit-receive probes 7, 8 on a shoe 6 supported by arm 2. A water couplant enters the probe assembly through pipe 16, passes across the probes' active faces, and emerges from pipes 20. Air is blown from orifices 27, 30 in tubes 22, 24, 29 to remove from strip 3 any water escaping between shoe 6 and the strip surface.
