Abstract
1423746 Coated products KANSAI PAINT CO Ltd 16 Feb 1973 [18 Feb 1972] 7851/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Coating compositions curable on exposure to an electron beam comprise from 5-30% by weight of silicon carbide and/or corundum, based on the weight of electron-curable filmforming components plus silicon carbide and/ or corundum. Suitable film-forming components include unsaturated polyesters, unsaturated acrylic copolymers, unsaturated polyurethanes, unsaturated epoxy resins, polybutadiene, unsaturated silicon resins, unsaturated polyamides and unsaturated melamine resins. The compositions, which may be applied to wood, metals, plastics (e.g. ABS resin sheet), leather or paper, have lower curing times than conventional electron beam-curable materials and increased hardness and abrasion resistance. The compositions may also include pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide or phthalocyanine blue, and pigment dispersants. In Examples the filmforming components used are (a) an unsaturated polyester derived from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, neopentyl glycol and diethylene glycol, the polyester being dissolved in a mixture of styrene and methyl methacrylate; (b) an unsaturated acrylic resin obtained by reacting polyglycidyl methacrylate with methacrylic acid, the resin being dissolved in a mixture of methyl methacrylate, n-buty alcrylate and ethylene glycol diacrylate; (c) an acrylate resin obtained by reacting an epoxy resin with acrylic acid, the acrylate resin being dissolved in a mixture of methyl methacrylate and 1, 6-hexanediol diacrylate; (d) an acrylateterminated polyester obtained by reacting a polyester (derived from succinic acid, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and propylene glycol) with tolylene diisocyanate and then with 2- hydroxy ethyl methacrylate, the modified polyester being dissolved in a mixture of methyl methacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate; and (e) an unsaturated acrylic resin obtained by reacting a methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/2-hydroxy ethyl acrylate copolymer with tolylene diisocyanate and then with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, the resin being dissolved in a mixture of methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate and propylene glycol diacrylate.
