Abstract

1447400 Thixotropic resin compositions VIANOVA KUNSTHARZ AG 20 Dec 1973 [21 Dec 1972 14 May 1973] 59196/73 Headings C3R C3B and C3P A water-soluble or water-dilutable thixotropic composition is prepared by reacting from 5-50 mol. per cent of the isocyanate reactive hydrogen atoms of a polymer containing hydroxyl and/or carboxyl groups with a product possessing a free isocyanate group and obtained by reacting an aromatic polyisocyanate with an unsaturated monomer possessing a reactive hydrogen atom and the chemical grouping The polyisocyanate is preferably 2,4- and/or 2,6-tolylene diisocyanate. The unsaturated monomer may be an hydroxyalkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, metharylic acid, monobutyl maleate, acrylamide or methacrylamide. The polymer may be an unsaturated polyester, an oil-modified polyester, an alkydmelamine resin, a silicone modified polyester resin, an acrylic resin or an epoxy resin. The reaction is preferably carried out at an elevated temperature in the absence of water or an isocyanate reactive solvent and the resulting product may be neutralized with an inorganic or organic base, e.g. a tertiary amine. In the examples thixotropic compositions are prepared in which the polymers used are (1) an unsaturated polyester prepared from propylene glycol, maleic anhydride, adipic acid and isophthalic acid; (2) an unsaturated polyester prepared from propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, phthalic anhydride and fumaric acid; (3) a C 7 -C 9 fatty acid modified alkyd resin; (4) a dehydrated castor oil-modified alkyd resin; (5) an acrylic resin prepared from a mixture comprising hydroxyethylmethacrylate, stryene, methyl methacrylate, isobutylmethacrylate, methacrylic acid, xylene and ethylacrylate, (6) a resin prepared from monobutylmaleate and styrene; (7) resin prepared by reacting an epoxy resin based on bisphenol A with methacrylic acid; (8) a silicone-modified alkyd resin, (9) a polyester prepared from trimellitic anhydride, adipic acid, phthalic anhydride and a glycidyl ether of a tertiary carboxylic acid, (10) a resin prepared from a mixture comprising acrylic acid, butyl acrylate, styrene, hexamethoxymethylmelamine, dicumylperoxide, tert. dodecylmercaptan in ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate; and the isocyanate reaction products used are the reaction products of tolylene diisocyanate and either (A) hydroxyethylmethacrylate; or (B) hydroxyethylacrylate; or (C) 2-hydroxypropyl-methacrylate or acrylate; or (D) tripropyleneglycolmonomethacrylate; or (E) methacrylic acid; or (F) maleic acid monobutylether; or (G) methacrylamide. Solvents used are styrene, xylene, white spirit, methylethacrylate, methoxyhexanone and ethyleneglycolmonoethyl ether acetate. The resin solutions obtained are diluted with polar organic solvents, e.g. butanol and glycol ethers, and optionally water. A paint is prepared from resin solution (polymer 4), a butylated melamine resin, titanium dioxide, phthalocyanine blue and organic solvents. Resin solution prepared from polymer (9) is blended with hexamethoxymelamine and then neutralized with triethylamine.
