Abstract
1423706 Automatic control of position INFORMATION STORAGE SYSTEMS Inc 11 May 1973 [21 Aug 1972] 22547/73 Heading G3N A servo system which positions a magnetichead 15, Fig. 1, over a selected one of several data tracks on a rotating disc 10 has coarse and fine modes of operation. Associated with disc 10 is a servo disc 11 bearing reference tracks corresponding in position to the data tracks on disc 10. Disc 11 is traversed by a head 16 which is moved together with head 15 by head positioning means 17. As the head 16 moves across the disc towards a desired track it produces a coarse signal as in Fig. 2B which enables the number of tracks crossed to be found. The signal is fed via boxes 19,24 in Fig. 1 to a counter 21 where the number of tracks crossed is subtracted from the number to be crossed before a desired 40 track is reached. When the count indicates zero denoting the passage of the last track proceeding the desired track, a circuit including a tacho-meter 34 and an integrator 35 is enabled to produce a velocity signal, Fig. 2C, which is integrated, Fig. 20, to give a fine position signal representing the position of the head between tracks 029 and 030. When this integrated signal reaches a reference value E set in servo mode detector 22, Fig. 1, the servo 23 is switched from its coarse to a fine mode where it responds to the fine signal and is able to lock on to the desired track 030 without overrun. The system may include a known feature whereby at a plurality of tracks before the desired track (track 27 as illustrated in Fig. 2C). The head movement may be slowed. U.S.A. Specification 3458785 is referred to for an example of a servo system which has coarse and fine modes of operation.
