Abstract

1423695 Heating fuel; spray carburetters DAIMLER-BENZ A G 6 Aug 1973 [5 Aug 1972] 37234/73 Heading F1B In a method for improving I.C. engine exhaust gas emission the fuel is completely vapourized by exhaust gas heat simultaneously with mechanical dispersion of the liquid fuel by impingement on a hot surface, the fuel vapour being mixed with cold combustion air by dispersal therein in the induction passage immediately upstream of the combustion chamber into which the mixture is introduced in the gaseous state. Fuel is pumped through a metering device 5, Fig. 1 inter-connected with throttle 12, to a nozzle 8 in a chamber 10 which projects into an exhaust pipe 9. An electrical heating element 13 and thermostat 14 may be enclosed in thermal insulation 16. In another embodiment an injection nozzle (17), Fig. 2 (not shown) projects into a chamber into which one end of a U-shaped heat exchanger rod (20) projects the other end of which enters an exhaust pipe from below. In another embodiment parallel induction pipes each have anvil-shaped impingement plates 31, Fig. 4, insulated at 32, and forming a bearing for a heat exchange rod 26 which is formed as a web 34, Fig. 5 in the adjacent exhaust pipes and which is rotated to control heating by a bi-metal spring 27 impinged on by the exhaust gases. In another embodiment a heating element 39, Fig. 6, which is embedded in an insulating plate 46 and projects into an exhaust pipe, heats fuel in ducts 43 between a carburetter float chamber 37 and the jets. The ducts may be surrounded by heating elements 48.
