Abstract

1423601 Hyperphosphates WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 23 Jan 1973 [24 Jan 1972] 3285/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division H1] The dielectric active medium in a laser comprises neodymium hyperphosphate, neodymiumchromium hyperphosphate or neodymiumlanthanum hyperphosphate. The crystals may be grown by heating a solution of the metal oxide(s) on phosphoric acid. An inert container, e.g. a gold or graphite crucible is used, the latter in an O 2 -free atmosphere. The solvent acid is metaphosphoric acid, which may be derived from normal acid in situ by heating. The metal oxide(s) may be derived in situ from salts. Examples describe the preparation of NdP 5 O 14 , LaNdO 3 (P 2 O 5 ) 5 and Cr 2 O 3 (P 2 O 5 ) 5 .
