Abstract
1423339 Epoxides IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 Feb 1973 [13 March 1972] 11592/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] An olefinic compound is oxidized to an epoxide by passing it in the vapour phase with oxygen at a temperature below 300‹ C. over a solid material comprising a copper compound, which is capable of being oxidized by the oxygen, separating the epoxide from the vapour products, reductively regenerating the solid material in which the copper has undergone oxidation, reusing the regenerated material for the production of epoxide and periodically regenerating it; and separating further amounts of epoxide formed, the solid material containing also an inorganic compound selected from metal oxides and other compounds of metals of Group II to IV and Periods 2-6 of the Periodic Classification such compounds being neither substantially acid nor substantially alkaline. Examples describe the oxidation of propylene to propylene oxide using catalysts comprising copper molybdate and titanium compounds.
