Abstract

1423253 Paper making ISOVOLTA OSTERREICHISCHE ISOLIERSTOFFWERKE AG 10 May 1973 [17 May 1972 21 Feb 1973] 22350/73 Heading D2B In a process for the manufacture of paper, fluting or cardboard a cellulosic raw material is added before heating an alkali metal silicate e.g. sodium and/or potassium water glass, and a thixotropic agent and/or a synthetic resin. The mixture is then beaten to 20-50‹ Schopper-Riegler, prior to the addition of an acid and/or an acid salt. The resulting mixture is processed in conventional manner to form the paper, fluting or cardboard. The pH value is preferably maintained at between 2.5 and 7.5, from 4.0-5.5 being particularly suitable for fluting. Cellulosic raw material. Suitable starting materials are bleached or unbleached soda cellulose, hemi-cellulose, sulphite cellulose, knotwood pulp, waste paper or a mixture of two or more thereof. If hemi-cellulose is used, corrugated board scrap, packing waste and/or mixed scrap may be added thereto. Thixotropic agent. These include starch containing products such as corn, rice or potato starch, carboxymethyl cellulose, alginates and seaweed fluor, vegetable gums such as tragacanth and mannogalactan, and inorganic materials such as bentonite and volcanic slag. The thixotropic agents may be used individually or as a mixture of two or more thereof. Synthetic resins. Suitable resins include ureaformaldehyde adducts, phenol-formaldehyde adducts, melamine-formaldehyde adducts, salicylic acid-formaldehyde adducts, acrylic acid resins, alkyd resins and latices. The resins may be used individually or as a mixture of two or more being added as solutions or dispersions. For increasing the bursting strength and breaking length of the paper product, a latex dispersion such as an acrylic-butadiene latex, a carboxylated latex or a styrenated latex may be added. The amount of resin added is from 0.1% to 15%. Acids. The acids use may be organic or inorganic and include hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric, acetic, formic, maleic and sulphonic acids. The acids may be used individually or as a mixture and may be added as such or in conjunction with a metal salt or as an acid salt such as a metal compound of aluminium with sulphuric acid e.g. alum, zinc chloride and/or copper sulphate. Metal compound. The metal compounds which may be added include those of aluminium, zinc, copper, titanium, barium, calcium, magnesium and cobalt.
